The Isle of Mainau.

This island of some 110 acres (45 hectare) has been of historical significance in the area since the Roman times when a fortress was set up on it. The island lies on the north western end of lake Constance which is a fresh water lake that is shared between 3 countries, Germany, Italy and Switzerland the island lies in the German area of the lake.

Today it is privately owned and comprises a botanical garden, an historic castle and a park. The aim of the Company that runs the island is to meet the demands of a “national monument”

 

Many attractions are contained on the island not only to bring in visitors but also to conserve plants, trees and even gardening traditions whilst maintaining the historic buildings. The owners still live in the castle and continue to play an important part in the life of the location.
