Fasnet in the Rhine Valley
Fasnet is celebrated differently in each area. I was taken to
Breisach on the Banks of the Rhine and the boarder with France. Here the
emphasis is on Costume and performance rather than just the masks and costumes.
The
event is staged in the Market Square where an area is erected with one side
provided for musicians and the Honoured guests and the other 3 sides available
to the public in small stands. The area is overlooked by the Minster on the top
of the hill.
The Groups who perform come from various schools, organisations and guilds many perform with new costumes each year.
The show is followed by a parade around the Town with lots of sweet throwing and noise.
