A few more Romans
The group of Roman Soldiers we had in town for the day came from
a larger group based in the Roman City of Chester and included one of only 5
full time Roman Soldiers in the Country.
He is employed by the Chester City Council and is responsible for mounting
displays and educational talks to schools and groups in the County. His Uniform
is as authentic as it can be made from the same metals to the same
specifications and thickness as those that have been found in the Chester area.
The horn in the picture is based on one that was excavated in Chester and was
used in the same way as the present bugle to give various calls to the troops.
The site of Roman uniforms in the Town centre did attract good
crowds and were well received by the locals. It was also good to see so many
youngsters getting involved.
Even
the Roman soldiers took time out to enjoy other activities taking place around
them. All were only to happy to discuss their costume or reason for being in the
groups with any one.
The children's army that was created drew children from the very young to young teenagers and at one point it looked as if they were prepared to match off to Watling Street and North to Chester.
